Cameron County Courts

The Cameron County court system consists of District Courts, Constitutional Courts, County Courts at Law, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts.

  • District Courts: They are the primary trial courts in the county with general jurisdiction over civil, criminal, and family law matters. They hear cases involving felony criminal offenses, civil disputes of $200 or more, family law matters, and probate cases. They also hear matters that are not within the jurisdiction of any other trial court in the county.
  • Constitutional County courts: They have limited jurisdiction over misdemeanor offenses that carry a jail sentence or fine over $500 and hear civil cases where the amount in dispute is between $200 and $10,000.
  • County Courts at Law: They are specialized courts that handle various matters, including probate, juvenile, misdemeanor criminal cases, and civil disputes of over $10,000. They have concurrent jurisdiction over many cases with the district courts in the county.
  • Justice Courts: They hear misdemeanor cases punishable by fine only, civil cases involving claims with $20,000 or less in dispute, and administrative hearings. They also have concurrent jurisdiction with district courts and municipal courts over expunction proceedings relating to the arrest of a person for an offense punishable by fine only.
  • Municipal Courts: have jurisdiction over violations of city ordinances and traffic offenses that occur within city limits. They handle cases such as traffic citations, municipal code violations, and Class C misdemeanor offenses. Municipal Courts may also handle small claims cases and other matters authorized by city ordinances.

Cameron County Criminal Records

Cameron County criminal records are partly open to the public. The criminal records of individuals charged with Class B misdemeanor or greater violations are accessible to the public, and there is restricted access to other criminal records. Only the owner of the criminal record can obtain copies of their record by using the personal review system. 

The Texas Department of Public Safety is the statewide repository for criminal history information and background checks. Cameron Birth and Death Records

Cameron County birth records and death records are only available to the subject, sibling, spouse, child, parent, grandparent, authorized agent, or legal representative. The County Clerk maintains Cameron County vital records and provides interested persons with access to copies of Cameron County birth certificates and death records. Access to these records is provided online using the Request for Vital Records portal. The request costs $23 for birth records, and $21 for death records.

A long-form Cameron County birth certificate is a comprehensive certified record that includes the original birth information and any corrections made over time.
